Home Computer Evolution

Reportedly from a 1954 issue of Popular Mechanics, this image and its caption give readers a glimpse into the future of home computing in 2004.  I especially liked the comment about how the combination of its teletype interface and use of the FORTRAN language would make it easy to use.

Mike, that is awesome - where did you find it? or is it one of your old photos from a previous job ;-)

Mike,

That's a fake. Check out snopes or urbanlegend - I think there's an article on one of them that discusses this picture in detail.

Regards,

Jason

Why does it need a steering wheel?

I wondered if it might be a fake, but it was faster for me to use the wishy washy lead-in "reportedly" than it was to research the picture's veracity :-) Ah well, if nothing else it's an example of someone with a good sense of humor.

It's become so popular (and has burned so many people) that Popular Mechanics is discounting the photo as well:

Real or not, I'm heading down to the boat store to get a wheel for my computer, that just rocks.

Yes, it is a fake. But I have seen more people (including myself) get "faked-out" by this. I believe it is a mock submarine room - if I recall correctly. Still, its a great glimps into what the history of technology.
