Some of you (especially in some of the larger organizations) may have noticed that the
SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition CTP does not list Windows 2000 as a supported platform. I hadn't really considered this as much of an issue because A) I'm betting it'll work anyway and B) there can't be that many organizations using Win2K.
As for whether it will work - If you try running a few tests programs using SQL Everywhere on Win2K it does work. But with it not being listed as "officially" supported that's a show-stopper for many organizations because what do they do if a problem is encountered.
Regarding the number of organizations using Win2K - I still think it's a relatively small percentage of organizations that still use Win2K - the problem is that these organizations are some of the largest and therefore each has a lot of Win2K machines (many of these organizations literally have thousands).
These 2 points combined create concerns for these organizations (as they should) when looking at Everywhere Edition as a solution. But here's the good news.
Microsoft is officially adding support for Win2K to SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition. Basically what this means is that Microsoft will be putting Everywhere Edition running on Win2K through the same level of testing on Win2K as on other platforms like WinXP and Vista.
So if you're one of those developers working in a company using Win2K, go for it - Check out how powerful and easy-to-use Everywhere Edition is.
And the best part is that whenever your organization does migrate to a new Windows platform (probably jumping directly to Vista for some of you) you know that the code you've invested in Everywhere Edition will continue to work. (You may have noticed I'm a big fan of SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition J )
